Is a Queenstown Zipline Tour Worth It?
An honest read on Queenstown's zipline tours: who they suit, what the full cost is with the gondola, what guests say, and how they compare with a bungy or the Kawarau Zipride.
For a family, a mixed group or anyone who wants a thrill short of a bungy, yes: Ziptrek’s tours are consistently rated 4.7 to 4.8 across more than 1,300 reviews, and one family group on the four-line tour spanned ages 6 to 70. For someone who has already ziplined elsewhere and wants the biggest adrenaline in Queenstown, a bungy or a jet boat may be the better spend.
What guests say
The reviews are unusually consistent, and they mostly name the guides. “Devon and Ben were incredible, made what was an already amazing experience even better!” wrote one guest on the six-line tour. A family group “of varying ages from 6 to 70” said the four-line tour “was enjoyed by all”. On the Kawarau Zipride, guests are positive but note its brevity: “Fun but it’s short.”
What it costs you
The full cost is the tour plus the Skyline Gondola, which the Ziptrek tours do not include and which Skyline lists at NZ$69 for an adult. For a couple on the six-line tour, that is two tours and two gondola tickets. In time, it is a morning or an afternoon, plus at least 40 minutes to get up the hill.
Zipline, bungy or Zipride
- A Ziptrek tour is a guided, gradual thrill with views and commentary, over two to three hours. The fear factor builds slowly.
- The Kawarau Zipride is one seated ride, minutes long, cheap and from age 8, at the home of AJ Hackett’s bungy.
- A bungy is a single big jump rather than a tour; it is not sold on this site, so check AJ Hackett’s own limits and prices.
